Mostly for my own sanity…

Too many mornings when i would wake up and find the entire front page of the site in the red, with just about every deal downvoted into the negative.

Some deserve it (expired, etc), but most are still live, and are absolutely fine. Not all are the greatest deals in the world, so maybe they don’t deserve dozens of upvotes, but they also don’t deserve to be in the minus. I mean you’ve seen what usually appears here. Not everything is a home run, but i do try to make sure that there is little “fluff”.

Once something is in the red, everyone automatically ignores it. This includes people who would otherwise take a look at the listing, see that it’s still live, and upvote the deal back to normal. Anything in the red gets auto skipped.

I don’t use the front page all that often. Most of the stuff i do is on the backend, which has a different interface, and doesn’t show votes, etc. So i may not even know about this for hours, if not days. In that time, a whole lot of perfectly good deals get skipped, and overall – having a front page where everything is in the red just makes the site “look bad”.

Deals here are curated, and some disagreements and downvotes are normal and inevitable. But when it’s the entire front page, it’s gone past just a disagreement. That’s someone purposely shitting on my site. Requiring login stops this behavior entirely. Whoever is doing it doesn’t want to login.

So yeah… there will be less upvotes, but at least my head will not explode in the mornings 🙂
