there is a touch-y version, based on finding this https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807216877745.html – the 4th item “15.6 Inch Touch” for $97.
i think this is a fantastic deal – if listing is correct indeed – ordered one and will know for sure next week.
Did some research, the way this works is pretty much “Windows only” – you plug over USB and it’s recognized as HID device, (multi)touch pad. Then switch Windows to “tablet” mode in settings for more tablet-y experience. Any other platform (Mac, linux…) i imagine at most can hope for glorified mouse experience.
Will need to plug 3 things:
HDMI for the videoUSB for the touchpadpower to the other USB-C “power” port
I expect this to “just work” and not need drivers, based on coming to Windows as 2 different devices it already knows how to deal with – HDMI monitor and USB touchpad. ’cause there will be no support coming from JSHIX, a company for which i could not find a web site
This touchscreen would nicely complement the $50 mini PC i got a few months ago from this deal https://plasticfantasticdeals.com/generic-mini-pc-atom-z8350-4-64gb-emmc/ – i am currently using it over RDC (Microsoft’s included for LAN, Chrome Remote Desktop when away from home) since lazy to switch HDMI inputs
I admit it was a bit hard to make it run well with that weak CPU, had to tune a few things (turn off pagefile, disable Microsoft Defender – esp. the real-time feature, flip a few services away from autostart) – but for a determined owner, i was able to make it run Windows 10 reasonably well.
There’s one failure i found so far – if inserting SSD in the SATA bay, when putting that disk under load the controller croaks (gets “fixed” by physical power cycling), so i guess extra storage only as external drives for this guy
Thanks for the tip! – i’ll keep this in mind and research LTSC when the fancy strikes for another mini PC. It was hard for me to fathom but here we are… <$100 mini PC with usable Windows on it
Okay – so i received today the touch-y screen and it has indeed a TOUCH SCREEN!
I have to admit, when i received and opened it, my heart sunk since nowhere does it discuss the touch screen functionality. The generic white box says “portable monitor” and nowhere in the 6 pages of passport-sized manual does it discuss touch screen. Only the (pseudo-UPC) barcode sticker on the side mentions “Touchscreen”
But after connecting the 3 cables as planned (power adapter, mini HDMI and USB to the mini PC), it did work as my original expectations – and just as i imagined, as far as Windows was concerned, those were 2 different devices – monitor (over HDMI) and touchpad (over USB). Yet it all worked together to the effect of touch-screenme poking with my fingers worked like on Windows tablet.
Now, further experiments confirmed the monitor can be powered from the USB data port too – and it uses ~0.35 A (both when Power or Data port), that’s <2W. So separate power i ponder, it may only be meant when display for a phone.
And i tried plugging into MacBook (Thunderbolt/USB 4) to use it with all-in-one cable. At first it only recognized “wch.cn touchscreen” device but then it dawned on me not all USB-C cables are created the same, so i tried different cables and luckily the box included an appropriate (USB-C DisplayPort?) cable, with which MacOS recognized a 2nd, “ASL” FHD display. And the touch screen feature worked too, so indeed a single cable can be enough.
The only flaw i have found so far is monitor’s own OSD system menus – those are in Chinese! To tune brightness/contrast/gamma and such, one has to read Chinese characters. I did not see a way to change the language, so i’ll have to translate with my phone what i am looking at
I don’t know…
I’m looking at this thing, and i’m just not a 1000% convinced that this is a touch screen.
Perhaps if they mentioned it in the title another dozen times or so… maybe that would ease my concerns 🙂
