If you have an Ikea near by, pick up their LSD NiMH (eneloop). The cells are made in Japan so most likely re-badged eneloop. $8-$10 per 4 battery = $2 – $2.5 per cell.

These are $5 for 8 cells = ~ $0.6 per cell, so cheaper, but also of unknown quality and definitely not the advertised capacity. And the charger seems to be of questionable quality.
